United Nations has done a great deal to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. Some of the important conventions adopted by the General Assembly were Conventions on Genocide (1948), Convention on Political Rights of Women (1952), Convention on Slavery (1956), Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (1965) and Convention on the Rights of Child (1989).
