Question

What are nonstoichiometric point defects?

Short Answer

Solution

  1. Nonstoichiometric point defect arises when the ratio of the number of atoms of one kind to that of other kind or the ratio of the number of cations to anions becomes different from that indicated by its chemical formula.
  2. In this defect, stoichiometry of the compound is changed. However, the change in stoichiometry does not cause any change in the crystal structure.
