Question
What happens when Borax is heated strongly.
Solution
When heated, borax undergoes various transitions. It first loses water molecules and swells. Then, it turns into a transparent liquid, solidifying to form a glass-like material called borax bead.
\[\ce{\underset{Borax}{Na2B4O7}.10H2O ->[\Delta] \underset{metaborate}{\underset{Sodium}{Na2B4O7}} ->[\Delta] 2NaBO2 + \underset{anhydride}{\underset{Boric}{B2O3}}}\]
