Question
Why must a cell be made ‘competent’ in biotechnology experiments? How does calcium ion help in doing so?
Solution
In biotechnology experiments, the cells must be rendered competent to enable them to absorb the hydrophilic DNA molecule from the external medium. Divalent calcium cations are administered to bacterial cells to render them competent and facilitate the uptake of DNA through the apertures in the cell wall.
