Definition

Life Span: The period from birth to the natural death of an organism represents its life span. It is possible to compute it by utilising the entity's average life span. It varies based on the individual and species and can last anywhere from a few minutes to several years. A specific entity's life span is determined by various genetic factors.

Characteristics of the life span of Organisms

  1. Life Span does not correlate with their sizes or shapes, the sizes of crows and parrots are not very different yet their life spans show a wide difference. Similarly, a mango tree has a much shorter life span as compared to a peepal tree.
  2. The death of every individual organism is a certainty. No individual is immortal, except for single-celled organisms.

Why do we say there is no natural death in single-celled organisms?

It is because there’s no dead body left, as the parent cell organism performs binary fission which results in two daughter single-celled organisms. Examples of unicellular organisms: Bacteria, Protozoa, Fungi (unicellular), Algae (unicellular), and Archaea.

Life span development

Lifespan evolution is scientific research that examines patterns of change, growth, and behavioural stability that occur across the lifespan of a species.
