Find the area of the shaded portion in the following figure.

Area of shaded portion = Area of trapezium ABCH + Area of trapezium CDEF
Area of trapezium = `1/2` × (Sum of parallel sides) × (Height)
∴ Area of trapezium ABCH = `1/2 xx (12 + 6) xx 4`
= `1/2 xx 18 xx 4`
= 18 × 2
= 36 cm2
∴ Area of trapezium CDEF = `1/2 xx (8 + 16) xx 3`
= `(24 xx 3)/2`
= 36 cm2
Area of shaded portion = 36 + 36 = 72 cm2
