प्रश्न

In the circuit given below:

(a) What is the combined resistance?
(b) What is the p.d. across the combined resistor?
(c) What is the p.d. across the 3 Ω resistor?
(d) What is the current in the 3 Ω resistor?
(e) What is the current in the 6 Ω resistor?

उत्तर

(a) The resistors of 6 Ω and 3 Ω are connected in parallel. Therefore, their combined resistance can be calculated as:
1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2
 Here, R1 = 6 Ω ,
          R2 = 3 Ω
1/R = (1/6) + (1/3 )
1/R = (1 + 2)/6
R = 6/3
R = 2 Ω

(b) Potential difference, V = IR
The potential difference across the combined resistance,
V = `(6xx2)` V
V = 12 V

(c) The potential difference across the 3 Ω resistor can be calculated as:
 V = IR
 V =`6xx3`= 18 V

(d) The current across the 3 Ω resistor is:
I = V/R
I = 12/3
I = 4 A

(e) The current across the 6 Ω resistor is:
I = V/R
I = 12/6
I = 2 A

An electric lamp of 100 Ω, a toaster of resistance 50 Ω, and a water filter of resistance 500 Ω are connected in parallel to a 220 V source. What is the resistance of an electric iron connected to the same source that takes as much current as all three appliances, and what is the current through it?

An electric heater which is connected to a 220 V supply line has two resistance coils A and B of 24 Ω resistance each. These coils can be used separately (one at a time), in series or in parallel. Calculate the current drawn when:

(a) only one coil A is used.
(b) coils and B are used in series.
(c) coils and B are uses in parallel.

Two resistances when connected in parallel give resultant value of 2 ohm; when connected in series the value becomes 9 ohm. Calculate the value of each resistance.

State how are the two resistors joined with a battery when potential difference is same across each resistor.

Calculate the equivalent resistance between the points A and B in Fig. if each resistance is 2·0 Ω.

What are the advantages of a parallel connection?

A particular resistance wire has a resistance of 3 ohm per meter. Find :

The total resistance of three lengths of this wire each 1.5 m long, in parallel.

In the figure below, the ammeter A reads 0.3 A. Calculate:
(i) the total resistance of the circuit
(ii) the value of R
(iii) the current flowing through R.

Two resistors when connected in parallel give the resultant resistance of 2 ohms, but when connected in series the effective resistance becomes 9 ohms. Calculate the value of each resistance.

You have three resistors of values 2 Ω, 3 Ω, and 5 Ω. How will you join them so that the total resistance is less than 1 Ω? Draw a diagram and find the total resistance.
