A coach or teacher is the person who imparts his or her knowledge to those who wish to learn and benefit from his or her expertise. A coach enables the athlete or trainee to achieve his highest level of performance; up to a degree that may not be possible if left to his or her own endeavour. A wise coach develops not only the fullest physical potential of the trainee but also develops those capacities and habits of mind and body which will continue to enrich and encourage them in later years.
All sports persons and athlete should be supervised by a coach or a teacher for the following reasons:
- A coach or a teacher has the competency, particularly in his or her game. He or she may be skilled in other games too. For this reason, he or she is capable of analysing the movements of the athlete or the sportsperson efficiently. The efficient monitoring of a trainee can prevent him from injuries.

- A coach or teacher is a storehouse of knowledge. He or she is familiar with the latest trends, developments, and constraints in a sport. He or she acts as an advisor, counsellor, demonstrator, friend, fact-finder, facilitator, mentor, motivator, and an evaluator. They latest knowledge about safety, accompanied by the attitude of concern for the safety of the trainee helps the trainee which to prevent injury.
- The presence of a coach gives the trainee confidence and motivation for practice. It also ensures that the trainee is behaving in a disciplined manner. The coach should be present during all practice sessions of the trainee. In the event that the coach cannot be present, a proper fill-in, whether it be an assistant coach, a substitute coach, or a qualified parent, should be there in his or her place.
- A coach ensures that the athletes are well-hydrated and have a properly functioning safety kit. If an injury occurs, he can keep an accurate record of it. He also keeps the emergency plans in advance.
- A coach adheres to physician orders concerning any of his or her athletes when the athlete comes for practice after recovering from an injury or during the time of recovery.
