Question

A handbag contained fifty ten rupees note, thirty-five fifty rupees note and fifteen hundred rupee note. One note is drawn from a handbag. What is the probability of getting:

Ten rupees note

Sum

Solution

Total number of notes = 50 + 35 + 15 = 100

Let E1 represent the event in which the chosen note is a 10 rupee note.

The number of ten rupee notes is 50.

Thus, P(E1) = `"Number of ten rupees note"/"Total number of notes"`

= `50/100`

= `1/2`

A card is drawn from a well shuffled pack of 52 playing cards. Find the probability of the event, the card drawn is a red card.

Activity: Let ‘S’ be the sample space.

∴ n(S) = 52

Event A: Card drawn is a red card.

∴ Total red cards = `square` hearts + 13 diamonds

∴ n(A) = `square`

∴ P(A) = `square/(n("S"))`    ......[Formula]

P(A) = `26/52`

P(A) = `square`

Activity: There are a total of 30 students in the class.

∴ n(S) = `square`

Event: A selected student wears glasses (spectacles).

∴ n(A) = `square`

P(A) = `square/("n"("S"))`     ......[Formula]

P(A) = `square`
