Question

A metal piece 6 cm long, 5 cm broad and x cm , high is dropped in a glass box containing water. The dimensions of the base of the glass box are 18 cm by 8 cm and the rise in water level is 0.5 cm. Find x.

Sum

Solution

Volume of the metal
= l x b x h
= 6 x 5 x x
= 30x cm3
Volume of water risen = Volume of metal immersed
l x b x h = 30x
18 x 8 x 0.5 = 3x
72 = 30x
x = 2.4cm.
