Question

Calculate the following:

The temp, at which 500 cc. of a gas ‘X’ at temp. 293K occupies half it’s original volume [pressure constant].

Numerical

Solution

V1 = 500 cc

T1 = 293 K

V2 = `500/2 = 250` cc

T2 = ?

At constant pressure

`"V"_1/"T"_1 = "V"_2/"T"_2`

∴ T2 = `("T"_1"V"_2)/"V"_1`

`= (293 xx 250)/500 = 146.5` K

= 146.5 − 273 = −126.5°C
