Question

Calculate the following:

The volume at s.t.p. occupied by a gas ‘Q’ originally occupying 153.7 cm3 at 287K and 750 mm. pressure [vapour pressure of gas ‘Q’ at 287K is 12 mm of Hg.]

Sum

Solution

Initial conditions

V1 = 153.7 cm3

P1 = 750 mm - 12 mm = 738 mm

T1 = 287 K

Final conditions

V2 = ?

P2 = 760 mm

T2 = 273 K

Using gas equation `("P"_1"V"_1)/"T"_1 = ("P"_2"V"_2)/"T"_2`

Substituting the values

`(738 xx 153.7)/287 = (760 xx "V"_2)/273`

V2 = `(738 xx 153.7 xx 273)/(287 xx 760)`

V2 = `(30,966,553.8)/(218,120)`

V2 = 141.970 cm3
