Differentiate between somaclones and somatic hybrids. Give one example of each.
Solution
Tissue culture technology helps to produce thousands of plants from a single plant by the process of micropropagation. Somaclones are the clones that are genetically identical to each other and the parent plant.
Examples: Tomato and banana
Fusion of isolated protoplasts from two different varieties of plants is called somatic hybridisation. The hybrid formed from somatic hybridisation is called somatic hybrid, which further grows into a new plant.
