Question

Expand: (2x2 + 3)4

Sum

Solution

Here a = 2x2, b = 3 and n = 4.

Using binomial theorem,

(2x2 + 3)4 = 4C0(2x2)4 (3)0 + 4C1(2x2)3 (3)1 + 4C2(2x2)2 (3)2 + 4C3(2x2)1 (3)3 + 4C4(2x)0 (3)4

Since, 4C0 = 4C4 = 1, 4C1 = 4C3 = 4,

4C2 = `(4 xx 3)/(2 xx 1)` = 6

 ∴ (2x2 + 3)4 = 1(16x8)(1) + 4(8x6)(3) + 6(4x4)(9) + 4(2x2)(27) + 1(1)(81)

= 16x8 + 96x6 + 216x4 + 216x2 + 81
