Question
Explain the following:
Tetravalency
Solution
Carbon can neither lose nor gain electrons to attain an octet. Thus, it shares four electrons with other atoms. This characteristic of carbon, by virtue of which it forms four covalent bonds, is called tetravalency of carbon.
In structural form:
\[\begin{array}{cc}
|\\
\ce{- C -}\\
|
\end{array}\]
