Question
Find the roots of the following equations:
`x-1/x = 3, x ≠ 0`
Solution
`x-1/x = 3`
⇒ x2 - 3x -1 = 0
On comparing this equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get
a = 1, b = -3 and c = -1
By using quadratic formula, we get
`x = (-b±sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`
`⇒ x = (3±sqrt(9+4))/2`
`⇒ x = (3±sqrt13)/2`
`∴ x = (3+sqrt13)/2 `
