Question

Find the excluded values, of the following expression

`y/(y^2 - 25)`

Sum

Solution

The expression `y/(y^2 - 25)` is undefined

when y2 – 25 = 0

y2 – 52 = 0

(y + 5) (y – 5) = 0

y + 5 = 0 or y – 5 = 0

∵ y = – 5 or y = 5

The excluded values are – 5 and 5
