Question
How is glucose prepared from starch?
Solution
Preparation of glucose from starch:
- Commercially, glucose is obtained on a large scale by hydrolysis of starch, by boiling at 393 K with dilute sulphuric acid under pressure.
\[\ce{\underset{\text{Starch}}{(C6H10O5)n}+ nH2O ->[dil H2SO4][393k-2-3 atm] \underset{\text{Glucose}}{nC6H12O6}}\] - Excess sulphuric acid is neutralized by adding chalk powder.
- Activated charcoal is used for the removal of coloured impurities.
- The solution is cooled, resulting in the separation of glucose crystals, which are filtered and removed.
