3x + 12 = 2x − 4

Sum

Solution

3x + 12 = 2x − 4

Subtracting 12 from both sides

⇒ 3x + 12 − 12 = 2x − 4 − 12

⇒ 3x = 2x − 16

Subtracting 2x from both sides

⇒ 3x − 2x = 2x − 16 − 2x

⇒ x = −16

Hence, x = −16 is the solution of the equation.
