Question

The number of goals scored by a football team is given below. Find the mode and median for the data of 2, 3, 2, 4, 6, 1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 6

Sum

Solution

Arranging the given data in ascending order: 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, 6

Clearly 2 occurs at the maximum of 3 times and so mode = 2

Here number of data n = 11, odd

∴ Median = `(("n" + 1)/2)^"th"` term

= `((11 + 1)/2)^"th"` term

= `(12/2)^"th"` term

= 6th term

Median = 3
