Definition

Median: Median is the value of the middle-most observation (s). The median is a measure of central tendency which gives the value of the middle-most observation in the data.

Notes

Median:

  • Median is the value of the middle-most observation (s).

  • The median is a measure of central tendency which gives the value of the middle-most observation in the data.

  • Median refers to the value which lies in the middle of the data (when arranged in an increasing or decreasing order) with half of the observations above it and the other half below it.

  • The median of the given data is the middle observation when the data is arranged in an ascending or descending order.

  • Steps to find median:
    1. Arrange the given data in ascending order or descending order.
    2. Find the middle observation.

Example

Find the median of the data: 24, 36, 46, 17, 18, 25, 35

We arrange the data in ascending order, we get 17, 18, 24, 25, 35, 36, 46 Median is the middle observation.

Therefore 25 is the median.
