Question

The removal of oxygen from a substance is called:
(a) oxidation
(b) corrosion
(c) reduction
(d) rancidity

Solution

(c) reduction
The removal of oxygen from the substance is called reduction.

Example: ZnO + C → Zn + CO
In this reaction, zinc loses oxygen and hence gets reduced. On the other hand, carbon gains oxygen and gets oxidised.
