Question
Which is optically denser: water or air? Give reason
Solution
Denser medium are those in which speed of light gets reduced when light travels through that medium.
when light travels through water or glass it's speed get reduced hence they are optically denser medium.
WATER is optically DENSER as the speed of light is less in water than in air.
2.25 × 108 ms-1 < 3 × 108 ms-1
speed of light in Water < speed of light in Air.

In the figure given alongside, a narrow beam of white light is shown to pass through a triangular glass prism. After passing through the prism, it produces a spectrum YX on the screen.
Why do different colours of white light bend through different angles with respect to the incident beam of light?
The colour of white light which is deviated the maximum on passing through the glass prism is:
(a) blue
(b) indigo
(c) red
(d) orange
The seven colours in the spectrum of sunlight in order, are represented as :
- A beam of monochromatic light undergoes minimum deviation through an equiangular prism, how does the beam pass through the prism, with respect to its base?
- If white light is used in the same way as in part (a) above, what change do you expect in the emergent beam?
- What conclusion do you draw about the nature of white light in part (b)?
What do you understand by the term spectrum?
The frequency range of visible light is from 3.75 × 1014 Hz to 7.5 × 1014 Hz. Calculate its wavelength range. Take speed of light = 3 × 108 m/s.
A glass prism is able to produce the spectrum when white light passes through it, but a glass slab doesn’t produce any spectrum. Explain why it is so.

Which one of the following Fig correctly shows the path of the ray through the glass block?
Sunlight entering through a narrow aperture falls on a prism. Draw a neat labelled ray diagram to show the formation of the spectrum on a screen. Name the colour obtained nearer the base of the prism.
