Red and White muscles

  Red muscle fibre White muscle fibre
1. They are thin. They are much thicker.
2. They have numerous mitochondria, a low glycogen content, and poorly formed sarcoplasmic. They are low in mitochondria and have many glycogen granules and a well-formed sarcoplasmic reticulum.
3. They are dark red because they contain an abundance of myoglobin. They are pale in hue because they have very little myoglobin.
4. Myoglobin stores oxygen as oxymyoglobin and releases it for oxidation during muscle contraction. They have little or no store of oxygen.
5. They obtain energy for contraction through aerobic respiration. They obtain energy for contraction mostly through anaerobic respiration.
6. They accumulate a little lactic acid. They accumulate lactic acid with heavy exertion.
7. They have gradual, sustained contractions for long periods of time. They have rapid contractions for short intervals.

They are innervated by tiny nerve fibres that conduct slowly.

Example: Extensor muscles of the back in man.
