Question

A plot of land of area 20km2 is represented on the map with a scale factor of 1:200000. Find: The area on the map that represented the plot of land.

Sum

Solution

area of land represented on the map:
20 Sq km = 20 x (100 x 1000)2 [as 1km = 100000cm]
= 20 x 1010

`"Area(map)"/"Area(land)"` = Scale

`"Area(map)"/(20 xx 10^10) = (1)/(200000)^2`

Area(map) = `(20 xx 10^10)/(200000)^2 = (20)/(4)`

Area(map) = 5cm2.
