Question
Answer the following question in 120 – 150 words:
Attempt a character sketch of Squire Cass.
Solution
Squire Cass is the most important citizen of Raveloe, father of Godfrey and Dunstan. Represented as the self-obsessed and arrogant man by the writer, Squire Cass is alternately indulgent and overly strict. His world is very confined and he has never met a person of his stature in his small world. Squire Cass is bad-tempered, neglectful, arrogant and a terrible father to Dunstan. Nevertheless, he is referred to as the greatest man in Raveloe by virtue of his wealth and authoritative demeanour. The only possible good thing about him is that he has the 'self-possession and authoritativeness' that some of his neighbours lack. He revels in the exhibition of his wealth, throwing annual New Year's Eve parties because he likes to perform the role of the generous and jovial patron. He thought highly of himself, attaining a king-like stature in the little town of Raveloe.
