Question

Answer the following question in 120 – 150 words:

After coming to Raveloe, for fifteen years, earning and hoarding money remained a passion for Silas. Comment.

Solution

Silas Marner came to Raveloe fifteen years back. Before coming to Raveloe, he lived in a town to the north, named Lantern Yard. Silas Marner of Lantern Yard was absolutely different from the Silas Marner of Raveloe. When Silas lived in Lantern Yard, he was happy. He had many friends and he was preparing to marry a beautiful girl. He was hard working and courteous. He moved out of Lantern Yard and went to Raveloe when Dane tossed him out of the village on the charges of stealing a bag filled with church's money. The bitter past experiences of his life made Silas loose his faith in God and man. In the course of time, he turned cold and bitter and focused on saving money and hoarding it. He lost interest in socialising. He enjoyed only in one thing, i.e. counting his money. Raveloe was not growing in terms of industrialization but they were more careful about their personal joy and well-being. Silas was the only person who was into industry work and was earning a lot of money.
