Question

Answer the following question in 120 – 150 words:

After robbing the Vicar, Griffin came back to find the Halls in his room. How did he manage to turn them out?

Solution

Griffin robs the Vicar's house in the early hours of Whit-Monday. Then he took their housekeeping money and left the house as quietly as he had come. Back at the inn, Mr and Mrs Hall realise that the stranger has not slept in his bed and that he has disappeared, leaving his clothes behind. They were surprised to see the bed sheets dancing. The furniture begins moving around as if it had a mind of its own. They begin to think the stranger has put spirits into the furniture, but when Mr Hall goes to speak with him, the stranger tells him to go to the devil. The Halls hear about rumours about the burglary from the local people and are now very suspicious of the stranger. He remains in his room, but Mrs. Hall does not bring him any food. He still has not paid his bill and she tells him that she and the whole village want to understand what is going on. The stranger becomes very angry and reveals that under his bandages he is, in fact invisible. The terrified owners chased him out of the inn with the help of Mr. Jaffers, the village constable.
