Question

Answer the following question in 120-150 words:

What do we learn about Mrs. Hall and Griffin from their first interaction at Coach and Horses inn?

Solution

Griffin, in search of a lodging, check-in at the Coach and Horses Inn at Iping. Mrs Halls, the owner of the lodging, is a socialising woman and always greets her guests with joy. When Griffin enters the lodging, Mrs. Halls welcomes him with the same friendliness. But Griffin remains indifferent towards her friendly advances. This makes Mrs. Hall suspicious of him, yet she provides him with an accommodation as it was, undoubtedly, a matter of luck to expect a guest at Iping at this dead time of year. In the first meeting, Mrs Halls could make out that Griffin has a mysterious persona. He keeps his weird and suspicious intentions within himself. The obscurity and secrecy in his character frustrated her, but she tries to remain unaffected by it, as he was the mode of income for her. Mr. Hall is suspicious of Griffin and his wife's relation. Mrs. Halls, just to show her dominance over her husband's will, accepts Griffin as one of the guests of the Coach and Horses Inn.
