Notes

The Invisible Man had to shed his clothes to become completely invisible at the Coach and Horses so that he could facilitate his escape. First, he became headless and handless, with his gloves pulled off. Then, he ran his arm down his waistcoat and as if by a miracle, the buttons to which his empty sleeve pointed became undone. He stooped down and fumbled with his shoes and socks, taking them off. The clothes fell around him as if they had been clothing air until then. One could see the collar and linings of clothes outlining an empty figure without corporeal substantiality. The head, hands and legs were all there but he was invisible. The suit of clothes, all unbuttoned and hanging loosely upon unseen supports eventually came off and he made his exit from the inn, creating a ruckus in his wake.
