Question

Answer the following question in 120 − 150 words:

Silas Marner lost his hoard of gold. Describe the circumstances under which his 'gold' is restored to him in the form of Eppie.

Solution

Silas was disconsolate to find his hoard of gold gone. Meanwhile, Molly, Godfrey’s secret wife was making her way to the squire house to reveal her secret when she takes a draught of opium and passes out on the road. She had a daughter in her arms who, drawn by the light of the fire in Silas’ cottage, wandered towards Silas’ door and fell asleep on his hearth. When Silas realised the little girl's presence, he was as astonished as he had been at the disappearance of the gold. Silas traced the girl’s footsteps to find her mother’s corpse lying in the snow. He took the little girl to the squire to find a doctor, who, after checking, declared that Molly was dead. To hold on to his social position, Godfrey kept mum on the identity of the girl, who was his secret daughter, which led Silas to adopt her.
Silas became increasingly fond of the child, named her Eppie and began to raise the child lovingly. Eppie became the link between Silas and the social community of the villagers. The loss of his gold ceased to bother Silas as Eppie, the newfound gold of his life, became far more important to him.
