Question
Answer the following question:
Find the distance between the parallel lines 3x + 4y + 3 = 0 and 3x + 4y + 15 = 0
Solution
Equations of the given parallel lines are
3x + 4y + 3 = 0 and 3x + 4y + 15 = 0
Here, a = 3, b = 4, c1 = 3 and c2 = 15
∴ Distance between the parallel lines
= `|("c"_1 - "c"_2)/sqrt("a"^2 + "b"^2)|`
= `|(3 - 15)/sqrt(3^2 + 4^2)|`
= `|(-12)/sqrt(9 + 16)|`
= `12/5"units"`
