Question

Find the sum of the deviations of the variate values 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 14 from their mean.

Solution

Values are 3,4,6,7,8,14.

∴  Mean = `"sum of numbers"/" Total number"`

             = `(3 + 4 + 6 + 7 + 8 +14)/6`

            `= 42 /6`

               = 7.

∴ Sum of deviation of values from their mean

⇒  (3 - 7) + (4 - 7) + (6 - 7) + (7 - 7) + (8 - 7) + (14 - 7)
⇒  (-4) + (-3) + (-1) + (0) + (1) + (7)

⇒ - 8 +8

= 0.
