Question
Find the mean and the median of: 0.5, 5.6, 3.8, 4.9, 2.7 and 4.4
Solution
Arranging in ascending order, we get
0.5, 2.7, 3.8, 4.4, 4.9, 5.6
Here, number of terms(n) = 6 which is even
∴ Median =`1/2 {"n"/2 "th term" + ("n"/2 + 1)"th term"}`
`= 1/2 {6/2 "th term" + (6/2 + 1) "th term"}`
`= 1/2 {3 "th term" + 4 "th term"}`
`= 1/2 {3.8 + 4.4}`
`= 1/2 xx 8.2 = 4.1`
∴ Median = 4.1
Mean = `"Sum of observations"/"Number of observations"`
`= (0.5 + 2.7 + 3.8 + 4.4 + 4.9 + 5.6)/6`
`= 21.9/6 = 3.65`
