Question
Find which of the following equations are quadratic:
(3x – 1)2 = 5(x + 8)
Solution
(3x – 1)2 = 5(x + 8)
`\implies` (9x2 – 6x + 1) = 5x + 40
9x2 – 6x – 5x + 1 – 40 = 0
∴ 9x2 – 11x – 39 = 0; which is of the form ax2 + bx + c = 0.
∴ Given equation is a quadratic equation.
