Question

`If [[2x +1    5x],[0     y^2 +1]]``= [[x+3   10],[0      26 ]]`, find the value of (x + y).

Solution

As the given matrices are equal, therefore, their corresponding elements must be equal. Comparing the corresponding elements, we get

2x + 1 = x + 3                                5x = 10

   0 = 0                                       y2 + 1 = 26     

 On simplifying, we get
x = 2 and y = ± 5

Therefore, x = 2 and y = ± 5
or x + y = 2 − 5 = −3

Hence, the value of (x + y) is 7, −3.
