Question
State how the following conversions can be carried out:
Ethyl alcohol to Ethane
Solution
When concentrated sulphuric acid is added to ethyl alcohol, it causes dehydration to give ethene. Ethene reacts with hydrozen in presence of Ni to give ethane.
\[\ce{C2H5OH ->[Conc.H2SO4][170°] CH2 = CH2 + H2O}\]
\[\ce{CH2 = CH2 + H2 ->[Ni][300°C] CH3 - CH3}\]
