The sum of two expressions is 5x2 – 3y2. If one of them is 3x2 + 4xy – y2, find the other.

Solution

(5x2 − 3y2) − (3x2 + 4xy − y2)

= 5x2 − 3y2 − 3x2 − 4xy + y2

= 5x2 − 3x2 − 4xy − 3y2 + y2

= 2x2 − 4xy − 2y2
