Significance of the Northern Plains

The Northern Plains are among the world's most level and extensive plains. They are extremely important because of the following reasons:

(i) Favourable for Human Settlement:

Because of their fertile soil, numerous rivers, and favourable climate, the northern plains are the most suitable for human settlement. As a result, these plains support one of the world's most densely populated regions. This plain has a larger population than the entire United States, which has ten times the area of the northern plains.

(ii) Rich Agricultural Land:

The northern plains are a rich agricultural land because of the fertile soils, perennial water resources, and favourable climate. Many multi-purpose dams have been built across some rivers to provide water for irrigation and generate electricity. Indeed, irrigation and modern facilities have transformed Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh into India's granaries.

(iii) Socio-Religious significance:

Because of their vast literature, art, and architecture, as well as sacred rivers, the Northern Plains have been socially and religiously significant. The Ganga has long been regarded as the most sacred river in the world. Many religious and historical cities, including Haridwar, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Allahabad, Mathura, and Patna, are located along the rivers of the northern plains. The religions of Buddha (Buddhism) and Mahavira (Jainism) flourished in these plains.

(iv) Transport and Communication Facilities:

These plains are nearly level, and their even surface allows for the construction of roads and railways. The rivers in the plains are navigable, allowing for easy transportation and thus promoting trade and commerce. The flatness of the land also allows for easy access to communication facilities.
