Sodium hydrogencarbonate (baking soda) is produced on a large scale by reacting a cold and concentrated solution of sodium chloride called brine with ammonia and carbon dioxide.

     NaCl + NH3 + H2O + CO2 →  NaHCO3 +  NH4Cl
