Question

A coin is tossed 1000 times, if the probability of getting a tail is 3/8, how many times head is obtained?

Options

  • 525

  • 375

  • 625

  •  725

MCQ

Solution

The total number of trials is 1000. Let be the number of times a tail occurs.

Let be the event of getting a tail.

The number of times A happens is x.

Remember the empirical or experimental or observed frequency approach to probability.

If n be the total number of trials of an experiment and A is an event associated to it such that A happens in m-trials. Then the empirical probability of happening of event is denoted by P (A) and is given by

` P (A) = m/n`

Therefore, we have` P (A) = x /1000 `

But, it is given that `P(A) = 3/8` . So, we have

` x/1000 = 3/8`

⇒ 8x = 3000

`⇒ x = 3000/8`

⇒ x = 375

Hence a tail is obtained 375 times.

Consequently, a head is obtained 1000 - 375 = 625 times.

A teacher wanted to analyse the performance of two sections of students in a mathematics test of 100 marks. Looking at their performances, she found that a few students got under 20 marks and a few got 70 marks or above. So she decided to group them into intervals of varying sizes as follows: 0 − 20, 20 − 30… 60 − 70, 70 − 100. Then she formed the following table:-

Marks Number of students
0 - 20 7
20 - 30 10
30 - 40 10
40 - 50 20
50 - 60 20
60 - 70 15
70 - above 8
         Total                               90

(i) Find the probability that a student obtained less than 20 % in the mathematics test.

(ii) Find the probability that a student obtained marks 60 or above.
