Question

A given mass of a gas occupied 143 cm3  at 27° C and 700 mm Hg pressure. What will be its volume at 300 K and 280 mm Hg pressure?

Numerical

Solution

V1 = 143 cm3

T1 = 27  C = 27+273 = 300 K

P1 = 700 mm Hg

T2 = 300 K

P2 = 280 mm Hg

V2 = ?

`therefore ("P"_1 "V"_1)/"T"_1 = ("P"_2 "V"_2)/"T"_2`

`therefore (700xx143)/300 = (280xx"V"_2)/300`

`therefore (700 xx 143 xx 300)/(300 xx 280)` = V2

`therefore "V"_2 = 357.5 " cm"^3`
