Question
An office opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 5.30 p.m. with a lunch break of 30 minutes. What is the ratio of lunch break to the total period in the office?
Solution
Office opens at = 9 AM
Office close at = 5:30 PM
Total hours of office = 5:30 PM – 9 AM = 17:30 – 9 = 8:30 h = 8 h 30 min
Lunch break = 30 min
Ratio of lunch break to the total period = `(30 min)/(8 h 30 min)`
= `(30 min)/((8 xx 60 + 30) min)` .....[∵ 1 h = 60 min]
= `(30 min)/(510 min)`
= `1/17` ......[On dividing numerator and denominator by 30]
= 1:17
