Question

If p(x) = 2 + 5x then p(2) + p(−2) − p(1).

Sum

Solution

p(x) = 2 + 5x

∴ p(2) = 2 + 5 × 2

= 2 + 10

∴ p(2) = 12

p(−2) = 2 + 5 × (−2)

= 2 − 10

∴ p(−2) = −8

p(1) = 2 + 5 × 1

= 2 + 5

= 7

∴ p(2) + p(−2) − p(1) = 12 + (−8) − 7

= 12 − 8 − 7

= 12 − 15

∴ p(1) = −3
