Question

Solve the following equation for x and give, in the following case, your answer correct to one decimal place:

5x2 + 10x – 3 = 0

Sum

Solution

5x2 + 10x – 3 = 0

Here a = 5, b = 10 and c = – 3

∴ `x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`

= `(-(-10)+- sqrt((10)^2 - 4(5)(-3)))/(2(5))`

= `(-10 +- sqrt160)/10`

= `(-10 +- 12.6)/10`

= `(-10 + 12.6)/10` and `(-10-12.6)/10`

= 0.26 and – 2.26

= 0.3 and – 2.3
