Question
State the assumptions of ‘Maslow’s Need hierarchy Theory of motivation'.
Solution
Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory was developed by Abraham H. Maslow. He felt that people have a variety of incentive systems that are unrelated to rewards. He believed that every human being has a hierarchy of five requirements. His theory is predicated on the following assumptions:
- He thought that human activity is driven by needs. Satisfaction of such requirements has an impact on their behaviours. When one need is met, they will shift their focus to other requirements.
- Only the next higher level need can encourage a person to work after a satisfied need.
- Only after the lower need is met does a person advance to the next higher raised of the hierarchy.
- The gradual fulfillment of needs across the hierarchy increases psychological health and creates a feeling of self and humanity.
