Challenges before Indian Democracy:

To make democracy more meaningful, the Indian government decentralized power and implemented a policy of reservation for women and the weaker sections of society. But we should consider whether such measures truly gave citizens power.

  1. Communalism and terrorism: One of the major challenges in front of Indian democracy is religious conflict and the resulting terrorism. Increasing religious hostility is retarding social stability. Terrorism has significantly reduced people's participation in the democratic process.
  2. Left extremists-Naxalism: In India, Naxalism is a major issue. Naxalism began as a movement to eradicate injustice against aggressive landless farmers and tribal people. But today Naxalism has become a violent struggle. Farmers' and tribal people's problems have lost importance in the Naxalite movement. Instead, Naxalite groups use violent measures to oppose government policies, such as attacking police officers and other such tactics.
  3. Corruption: In India, the scope of Corruption is said to be widespread in the public sector. Corruption at the political and administrative levels has reduced the government's working capacity. People become distrustful and dissatisfied with the entire governmental system as a result of delays in government work, poor public services and facilities, and various financial blunders. Corruption in the electoral process, bogus voting, bribing voters, kidnapping voters, and other such practices undermine public trust in the democratic process.
  4. Criminalization of politics: Increased criminal participation in political processes is another serious issue for democratic systems. Sometimes political parties give candidature to people having a criminal background and face criminal allegations and allegations of corruption. This elevates the role of money and muscle power in politics. This could also lead to violence during elections.
  5. Social challenges: Apart from the aforementioned challenges, Indian democracy faces additional social challenges. Unemployment, unequal distribution of resources, widening disparities between rich and poor, and caste-based issues must all be resolved.
