Notes
Elections:
Elections are held on a regular basis in every democracy. More than a hundred countries around the world hold elections to select people's representatives. We also learn that elections are held in many countries that are not democratic. During an election, voters have many options, including who will make laws for them. They have the ability to choose who will form the government and make major decisions. They can select the party whose policies will guide the government and legislative process. Modern democracy is a representative democracy. It is not possible to involve the entire population in the decision-making in a democracy. As a result, the practice of voting for some persons on behalf of the entire population as representatives to rule the government began. The representatives who form the government are expected to be responsible to the people and give preference to the welfare of the people.
Importance of Elections
- The functioning of India's democracy has been strongly affected by elections.
- In a democracy, representation and elections are two crucial activities.
- We are aware that elections are used to choose the representatives of the people.
- Elections assist in peacefully changing the balance of power.
- The chance to govern is given to many political parties.
- Governmental policies and society both evolve.
- We anticipate that the representatives we choose will be effective, trustworthy, and honest, as well as respectful of the views of others.
Election Process
- Additionally, a free, fair, and trustworthy election process is required.
- An unbiased Election Commission will oversee the election process in India, as provided for in the Indian Constitution.
- All important elections in our country are conducted by the Election Commission of India and the State level Election Commissions.
- Election Commission is responsible for overseeing and controlling every step of the electoral process, from announcing the election date to announcing the results.
- The election process is an inseparable component of a comprehensive democratic process.
Conditions of a democratic election:
- First and foremost, everyone should have the ability to choose. This means that everyone should have one vote, with each vote having equal weight.
- Second, there must be something from which to choose. Parties and candidates should be able to contest elections and provide voters with some real options.
- Third, the option should be made available at regular intervals. Elections must be held on a regular basis every few years.
- Fourth, the people's choice candidate should be elected.
- Fifth, elections should be conducted in a free and fair manner where people can choose as they really wish.
