Solve the following for x, where |x| is modulus function, [x] is greatest interger function, {x} is a fractional part function

2[2x − 5] − 1 = 7

Sum

Solution

2[2x − 5] − 1 = 7

∴ 2[2x − 5] = 8

∴ [2x − 5] = 4

∴ 4 ≤ 2x − 5 < 5

∴ 9 ≤ 2x < 10

∴ `9/2 ≤ x < 5`

∴ `x ∈ [9/2, 5)`

∴ solution set is `[9/2, 5)`.
