Find the discriminant of the quadratic equation 4x2 – 5 = 0 and hence comment on the nature of roots of the equation.
Solution
4x2 – 5 = 0
Here a = 4, b = 0, c = –5
Discriminant (D) = b2 – 4ac
= 0 – 4 × 4(–5)
= 80 > 0
Since, D > 0, therefore roots are real and distinct.
